About
A living man in an ash-grey hood, forearms chalked to the elbow with grave-dirt, a long iron spade carried like a soldier's pike. He does not shout or charge; he plants his feet at the trench line and swings with the flat, patient rhythm of someone who has dug all day and means to dig all night.
The Ashen do not raise the dead themselves — they hire men to open the way. Diggers are paid in old Caelmoran coin, minted three hundred years ago and polished bright, and told never to ask why the buyers only want crowns, seals, and named bones. Most diggers stop asking after the first payday. The ones who keep digging past the groan of a barrow door stop being entirely men who dig for money.
