About

A skittering carpet of beetles armored in lapis, carnelian, and gold leaf — grave-jewels grown into carapace over generations of nesting in treasure. The swarm moves as one appetite, flowing over walls and through grille-work, and glitters beautifully in the half-second before it reaches you.

Tomb-robbers tell it as a curse; the scarabs are only thorough. Sealed in with the grave-goods they were painted onto, the beetles ate wrappings, then resin, then everything else, and their shells learned to grow what they fed on. Every swarm is a ledger of what some dynasty took into the dark — and an argument, in brilliant color, that nothing stays owned forever.
